Storm over the Taiwan Strait

  • Description

This game is the first in the Oriental Flagship Company's "This is No Drill" series. The theme is a future Mainland Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

The game includes 125 counters, a foamboard-mounted map with a hexagonal grid superimposed on a satellite photo of Taiwan, a novel sliding Combat Resolution Table (instead of dice), a counter tray, and a very nice box.

The game, sometimes described as the first Mainland Chinese board wargame, is closely based on Ty Bomba's When Dragons Fight.

This game is closely based on Ty Bomba's When Dragons Fight. The differences are:

    1) The map uses different art (a satellite photo) for the terrain, but is the same scale and has the same types of terrain. Twenty-seven of the 29 landing areas are in the same places. The map in this game is also more mountainous than in "When Dragons Fight."

    2) The counters are redone with Chinese writing, different graphics on the control markers, and roughly five (out of approximately 120) different units. Some of the combat factors on the remaining units have been slightly adjusted.

    3) Roughly 50-70% of the rules are a word-for-word translation. Some of the other text is reorganized, but substantively the same. There are a couple of significant changes, most notably the introduction of four scenarios, some of which use a second landing marker. ("When Dragons Fight" has only one scenario with one landing marker.) There are some other slight changes.

    4) Unlike "When Dragons Fight," this game uses no die. Instead, there is a "slide rule" type chart. Each player picks a number from 1-10 and you manipulate the chart to generate a random number. The combat results tables are the same, however.
