Minoru

  • Description

Minoru is a British horse racing game manufactured by John Jacques. The five horses are die cast metal painted in different colors to designate racing teams. The large playing surface is folded felt.

Named for King Edward VII's Epsom Derby-winning Irish thoroughbred racehorse, Minoru, the game Minoru was a popular parlor game, kept available in the lounge of hotels and clubs as well as in homes between the world wars.

In the standard game, five horses are used and movement is dictated by the dealing of playing cards (one for each horse). The horse with the highest value card moves forward one space. This is then repeated until one horse reaches the finish line. Odds are different for each horse and relate directly to the number of spaces each horse must travel along its individual lane to reach the finish line. Horses starting with the highest odds have more spaces to cover before they reach the winning post, and there is therefore less chance of them doing so before the others.

In the double event game, eight horses are used and there are betting options for placed horses as well as for the winner. Instead of turning up five cards each time to determine which horse is to move, the cards are shuffled and cut and only one card at a time is revealed. The horse (or horses) allocated such a numbered or suited card move accordingly.

Odds are different for each horse and relate not only to the number of spaces each horse must travel along its individual lane to reach the finish line, but also the chances of the specific card or cards being revealed to enable the horse(s) to move.
