The game is played on an 8x8 grid or chessboard. The middle four squares are each occupied by one Soldier. All edge spaces each contain one Indian. A custom deck of cards is key to the game play. The players draw hands of cards from the shared deck. Card play determines when units may move, attack, or defend.
